A joint activity of the African Union, the Government of Senegal, the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

Objectives

Making use of lessons learnt and experience gained with renewable energy projects in Africa and elsewhere, the conference examined how bottlenecks to renewable energy market related to policies, technologies, financing and capacity can be addressed so as to increase energy challenges in Africa. The conference brought together high-level decision makers to provide visible leadership and commitment to a common strategy for market-based scaling up of renewable energies that is informed by lessons learnt from concrete case studies and the energy situation in Africa.

Specifically, the conference has the following key objectives:

    * Assess renewable energy markets in Africa and the relevance of renewable energy to Africa's energy challenges and needs, and identify key barriers;
    * Identify and agree on enabling policy and regulatory frameworks that would stimulate market-based dissemination of renewable energies in Africa;
    * Assess renewable energy technologies related challenges that Africa faces and discuss how they can be addressed;
    * Identify capacity needs for enablers or facilitators of renewable energy markets in Africa; and
    * Engage stakeholders in issue-oriented discussions so as to share experience and agree on a common plan of action.

Participation

Over 300 participants consisting of African Ministers and high-level government officials; German government officials; European Commission officials; Individual enterprises interested in renewable energy and energy efficiency as business opportunities; African and international regional business associations; South-South Centres (e.g., China, India); Project developers; Banks and finance institutes; Civil society representatives; Research institutes, technology institutes and universities; United Nations agencies attended this conference.
